each division moves on to race at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio for the World Championship, with the runners-up going as alternates if needed.
Tbny Troib of Rosson&Troilo, the founder and president of the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby Foundation as well as the principal sponsor, ensures that the local winners have the funding to move on to the grand stage at Akron’s Derby Downs.
“Hats off to Tony and the rest of the committee,” Gilmore said. “Without their support we wouldn’t be able to be this successful.”
Gilmore also boasts of the newly established Junior Committee made up of both former and current drivers who help organize the event and supervise on derby day.
A regional director as well, Gilmore says that to her knowledge, this is the first committee of its kind in the nation. She feels strongly that by infusing the older and former racers into the management process the younger racers are able to get more out of the experience.
“It’s funny to see the kids stand quietly and attentively when talking to (the adults) and then get very excited and animated when talking to the (Junior) Committee members.” Gilmore said with a laugh. “The older kids serve as mentors to the younger drivers.”
Saturday’s event will kick off with an opening ceremony and parade to the top of Blue Ridge Avenue beside Yowell Meadow Park in downtown Culpeper. The festivities will start at about 8 a.m. and will continue into the afternoon.
This year many of the 115 competitors will wear heavy hearts as they remember Stan Karas, one of the founding members of the Soap Box Derby of Culpeper, who passed away last month after a long battle with cancer.,
“You can’t put into words what Stan meant to this derby” Gilmore said. “He was active in all aspects of the derby and was very instrumental to our success. He is a treasure that will be greatly missed.”
