Proposal to raise
school lunches
Dr. Chappell also proposed an increase in the school breakfast and lunch programs. The proposal detailed an increase of $.10 for breakfast and $.25 in the lunch program at the elementary school. High school lunches would rise $.10.
Breakfast and lunch at the elementary school would cost $1.10 and $1.75 respectively, and $1.50 and $2.10 at the high school under Chappell’s proposal. Adult meals would be $1.75 and $3.00.
Chappell noted that there has not been an increase in meal costs for five years.
“An increase will help to cover some of the costs,” Chappell said.
The school lunch program is not self-sustaining and requires additional supplements from the school board. According to Dr. Chappell, the budget includes $47,000 to supplement the program.
Mills asked Chappell for additional numbers, noting the amount of meals sold and what kind of additional funds would come from raising the prices.
Piedmont District representative Aline Johnson was also wary.
“I think that it might help a little bit but I want to make sure that it won’t hurt students and their families.”
School board members will vote on the proposed hike in upcoming months.
The next school board meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 11.
