After years of suffering with unreliable phone service, Slate Mills residents finally seem to be getting what they want from Verizon: an attempt at a lasting solution.
During the past two weeks, fed-up Verizon customers in the area have contacted county, state and federal officials to inform them of the effect that on-and-off phone service is having on businesses and residents in the southern part of Rappahannock County.
Cell phones do not work in the area, and residents say the phone outages are a safety issue because they are unable to reach police and emergency services. In some cases, homes have been without phone service for more ^thant^week. ^Gther problems residents " hhve reported include static and lQuii crackmg on the phone lines, dropped calls and incoming calls don’t ring. A few days ago, incoming calls to homes in the area would cut out as soon as someone answered the phone.
The ongoing problems in the Slate Mills area stem from water and lightning damage to the copper cable that serves the 50 or so homes on Route 707, said Harry Mitchell, media relations director for Verizon’s Mid-Atlantic Bureau.
