My grandmother, Maria Teresa Voci, arrived from the hill town of Stalleti, Italy, on the Fourth of July, 1913. She and her family spent their first night on Ellis Island. Nonno Rocco, her father, had come earlier to the US to find employment and housing, and had returned to collect his family. My great-grandfather’s goal was to escape the severe economic poverty of Calabria in Southern Italy and to find new economic independence. Among my grandmother's first memories in this country were the fireworks on the Fourth of July celebrating the independence of this country from oppression and her family’s hopes for a better future.
This year the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department has taken the lead to provide all of us with a celebration that will bring us together as a community to celebrate a heritage that we all share, the Declaration of Independence. It is a reminder that the price of democracy is eternal vigilance from forces from within and from outside our nation.
