Sporting authentic reproduction mule boots, a rawhide shirt and cowboy hat, it was his leather holster carrying two 45 caliber colt revolvers that gave him a particular air of authenticity. “They're blanks,. he insisted when queried about his ammunition but then gave you a quick wink and a clever smile as he swaggered away that left you wondering. His sidekick for this trip was from Essex, Maryland. Jim Dickinson, aka “Faro Jed” likewise was bedecked in Western garb and had two revolvers strapped to his sides. Small leather loops held the triggers safely in place and, like Cowboy Roy, he was adamant that they were loaded with blanks. Both cowboys are members of the Single Action Shooting Society which has chapters across the United States. Getting together for target shooting tournaments, members dress in Western wear and some take on names suggestive of their occupations.
While loaded with blanks, they certainly make a bang when these coach cowboys go into action.
“You can’t have them,” screeched one of the passengers delirious with laughter as she clutched her strand of marble-sized white pearls. “Give them to him,” shouted another, “he’s got a gun.”
