A short extension will need to be installed and the work is scheduled to be completed by July 20, Mitchell said.
“We’re committed to getting this thing in tip-top shape,” he said. “We’re hopeful that this will take care of these issues.”
Mitchell said Verizon already had a plan in place to change the copper cable over to fiber-optics eventually. The continued problems in the Slate Mills area led the company to do it now.
The fiber-optic line will not be enough to provide high-speed Internet service to the area, Mitchell said. Additional electronic equipment would need to installed at the terminal, and it does not appear that the company has any plans to do that anytime soon.
“There’s only so much money in our budget ... to make it work,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got to look at our investments toward high-speed Internet to where we can get a return on it.”
