Rappahannock County High School second baseman Travis Jenkins hit his first career home run in 2006. While he can’t help but crack a smile when he talks about his monstrous shot, he says that hitting a home run isn’t the greatest feeling he’s ever experienced on a baseball field.
No siree, Jenkins comes from a different breed.
He’s a coach’s son. The boy of a coach who stresses defensive perfection.
So, unlike most high school baseball players, the Panthers junior is a ball player who prides himself on glove work rather than with the stick.
Jenkins gets just as much joy out of snatching a line drive through the middle as he does belting a ball over the fence.
“I have very high standards defensively,” Jenkins said. “I work hard on offense as well, but defense is my strength.”
Jenkins rarely makes an error, but when he does, he takes it hard and works to ensure that he doesn’t make the same mistake again.
