Corbin and Funk also own K & M Equipment Rentals at 1300 Orange Road, which rents out larger power tools and machinery for commercial or contracting purposes. They felt taking over the Swan’s business would be a perfect fit.
“It fits real well with our rental business because we were doing a lot of sales and service. We have the commercial line up there and this is the residential end of it,” said Corbin.
In the middle of May, Jim Swan contacted K & M, saying he was getting out of the business. Jim’s son, David Swan, served as manager and was ready to move on as well.
“He said he was tired and wanted to spend his summers out on his place in Montana,” said Corbin. “Mr. Swan has been extremely fair with the sale and everything. It’s been a good switch.”
Jim Swan’s grandfather, J.A. Swan, first opened the business in 1901 on E. Davis Street in Culpeper. He sold plows, feed, fertilizer, and even horse-drawn buggies. In 1983, the Swan business sold off its farm division and focused on lawn and garden equipment.
