It’s a hoot.
Whether you’re a train buff a nut about nostalgia or just want to spend a leisurely time reliving part of railroad history, a ride on the Walkersville Southern is worth the trip. Amtrak this is not so don’t expect a fast moving modem motor coach. The passenger cars are restored vintage 1920s, the caboose is a 1949 product of the Wabash Railroad’s shops in Illinois and the engine is a 1939 Davenport 25-ton locomotive, powered by a Caterpillar 3406 six-cylinder diesel engine. Top speed on this trip is 10 miles an hour.
But, what a ride.
Go back in time as you sit on the bench outside the Walkersville Railroad Station. It was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the early 1900s and continues to serve as the ticket office just as it did 100 years ago. If you get there early you can watch the engineer, the brakeman and the fireman lovingly escort the old engine out of one of the adjacent buildings to couple with the passenger trains and caboose. It will then move slowly forward to stop at the station to await the arrival of that day’s passengers. Rim by a crew of trained volunteers, they chat by hand held radios making sure that the air brakes are functioning just right.
