Derby day is near. And this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever.
On Saturday, 117 cars are scheduled to take to Blue Ridge Avenue’s rolling hill to compete in the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby Foundation’s fifth annual Soap Box Derby of Culpeper.
The Soap Box Derby of Culpeper comes in this year hoping to improve on its standing as the fourth largest derby in the nation after 104 racers competed last year.
“It’s wonderful to have so much community support,” Local race director Frankie Gilmore said. “We are competing with cities like Washington, Dallas and Fredericksburg, and we are getting as much or more support.” ,
The derby is split into three divisions based on age and experience - Stock, Super Stock, and Masters. The Stock Division is the largest with 58 drivers scheduled to compete, followed by the Super Stock Division with 47 drivers, and the Masters Division with nine competitors. The winner of
