Doug is making his Soap Box Derby debut this year, and he is very excited about it.
“I just wanted to try something new” he said. “I’ve never done anything like this.”
Doug and his father, Doug Sr., spent about five days putting the car together. Doug Sr. will also be Doug’s pit crew chief.
The fifth-grader had a chance to take a few test drives in his car on Saturday at Fun Day at Culpeper High School, where he won five races. “It’s really fun,” Doug said.
Doug’s car is emblazoned with flames and pin stripes to give it a sleek, speedy look.
He said he learned a lot while constructing his first Soap Box Derby car. “It’s amazing how sensitive the alignment is,” he said.
Doug says he hopes to move up to the Super Stock division for next year’s derby. He also likes to play football and baseball.
