-Photo courtm of Anw Kfyiw WASHINGTON’S FIRST COURT HOUSE — Before the stately brick building was constructed on Gay Street in 1835, court in the fledgling county of Rappahannock was held for two years in the frame building that stood where the Washington Cash Store is now located. Workmen A.J. Slaughter, Sam Bruce, Sam Hetrick stood on the steps for this old photo taken before the structure was torn down to make way for William Stuart’s General Merchandise Store. The boys sitting in front are “Cheese” Oden, Billy Fox and Lyle Stuart. The county rented the building in 1833-1834 for the munificent sum of $25 per year.
