General Wade Hampton's cavalry and the command of General Pleasanton in the fall of 1863, Captain Hart, chief of artillery under General Hampton, was my father’s guest. Through him, the rumor that my father had some old peach brandy reached the famous South Carolinian. General Hampton sent his orderly to my father and ‘borrowed’ a canteen of the brandy.
“Years later, when the general was Senator Wade Hampton, I met him in Washington, D.C. I recalled the ‘brandy borrowing.' With gusto, the general said: ‘Yes sir! I remember. The brandy was fine, too!’ ”
The Washington Herald also reported a story of how the town freed a Union officer from Confederate custody.
