In the "A” bracket of men’s singles, Doug Baumgardner sweated through a hard fought match with Jon Lee, winning 3-6, 63, 6-3. Tired from the effort, Rappahannock’s commonwealth’s attorney lost to Rod Kirkpatrick in the final, however, 6-0, 6-1.
In an exciting men’s doubles championship, the team of Dennis Fairbrother and Jens Tholan was victorious over Rayner Snead and Rod Kirkpatrick, 6-0, 46, 6-1.
Fee Dropped
Effective July 1, the laboratory fee for testing horses for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) will no longer be charged.
Testing horses for EIA is the responsibility of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Division of Animal Health and Dairies. The 1982 session of the General Assembly passed legislation to abolish the laboratory fee of approximately S2.50 for each test.
According to State Veterinarian, Dr. George B. Estes, the rationale for dropping the laboratory fee is that since the testing is required by law, the horse owner should not have to pay for the laboratory work involved.
EIA is an acute or chronic virus disease of horses, characterized by fever, depression, weakness, loss of weight and anemia. The current EIA regulations require the testing of horses during certain conditions such as horse shows, trail rides or whenever horses are involved in a group event. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and-or biting flies.
