“Rappahannock County—Fact. Fiction, Foolishness and Fairfax Story,” the position of “gentlemen justice” was zealously guarded because of the prestige involved. Appointments were made by the justices themselves which often led to the reins of county government resting in the hands of a few powerful families. Until the new Constitutuion was adopted in 1851, the justices served without pay.
