The town of Washington has its Civil War sagas and its tales of heroes who fought in that War between the States but the stories are more in line of personal anecdotes since Rappahannock came through the conflict unscarred by any major battles.
Middleton Miller, who built The Maples at the edge of town in 1850, owned Glenn Mills at Waterloo in Fauquier County which first manufactured the “Rebel Gray” worn by Confederate soldiers.
Clarence J. Miller recalled a Civil War episode at The Maples which was published in the Washington Herald on February 7, 1926:
