General Daniel Ullman, U.S.A., former Attorney General for the State of New York, was sick at The Maples for six weeks during the Civil War. While abed with typhoid, he was ‘captured’ by Major John Scott, C.S.A., of Fauquier County. Complimenting the major on some book he had written, the general won his favor. In return, Scott assured the Union officer that he “needn’t hurry to get well.” When Ullman recovered, Washington citizens sent a petition to Richmond, telling how considerate the general had been and as a result, he was soon released.
