:onsiderable portion of the town’s commercial activity. Mr. Miller recalls a barn where the old movie house now stands and a harness shop next door. Cabinet maker Peter Kramer’s shop was a livery stable operated by George Washington Clark, an enterprising gentleman who also carried the mail and worked the forge as a blacksmith.
“We had a big fire at the livery stable in March of 1916. I don’t know what started it—it was at night. The noise was terrible. Seven or eight horses burned up. We had a bucket brigade from the well in front of the courthouse and the well at the house behind the livery stable to save the Baptist Church and the house next to it. It was cold that night! I was standing on the porch of the church throwing water up on the window,” Jack recalled. “1 always took the easy job,” he added jokingly. “There were no fire departments in those days. Whenever there was a fire, everybody came running with a bucket. Colored and white worked together whenever anything caught on fire.”
