Washington House has seen much of the town's history and while it's not one of the hundreds and hundreds of sites where the Father of the Nation reportedly slept. George Washington once tapped his foot to music under its roof, according to local stories.
“We’ve been looking for George Washington for some time now,” reports Edna Walker, who with her husband Paul and daughter and son-in-law Fran and Charlie Eldred, currently own the graceful old building. “He was related to the Thornton family (Edna’s forebearers) and the tale is he came here to visit his relatives. That’s when he was supposed to have danced in the dining room.”
But as to George’s part In the Sounding of the town, she isn’t so sure. Culpeper County records list the names of the trustees who were appointed to lay off the streets in 1797-1798, according to Mrs. Walker. “The Culpeper records don’t say a thing about George Washington," she added.
