Apart from the sites, there's the appeal of the individuals I see in the streets, the concern and care with which everyone tends the babes in arms, grandparents, mothers and fathers. June 1 was Children’s Day and the streets were full of well-dressed children, girls wearing pink tulle bows in their black hair.
The intricacies of agricultural practices are absorbing too, as I observe the irrigation systems and inter-cropping of orchards, vegetables and fields of grain here in the vast desert and the mountains at Lanchow to which we came yesterday and where we visited an intensive farming commune today.
