Hugh Chrisman, at the House of Dried Flowers farther west on 211, has collected silk and dried flowers, locally-grown material, floral supplies, miniatures, ribbons, and Christmas ornaments. He’s open every day except Tuesday and Wednesday.
On your right as you approach Skyline Drive on Rt. 211 you will see the Parkway Gift Shop, reopened this weekend with a special sale of fine wooden rockers. The Parkway will have more specials throughout the summer and will carry a line of furniture, gifts, pottery and souvenirs.,.
Farther west you will come to a tiny log cabin restored by Phyllis and Jimmy Swindler. Thornton Gap Country Store and Antique* dates from the 1800's when settlers and traders used the gap as a passage through the mountains. In the cabin, the Swindlers have collected and displayed antiques and Appalachian crafts, including wooden furniture handmade by Tom Von Fange.
The Swindlers also operate Country Manor, gift shop specializing in hard-to-find and classic country items from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here are the Blue Ridge Mountain trolls, whimsical creatures of woodland composition. Country Manor is a family business run by Phyllis, Jimmy, and their children, Jim Natalie and Bobbette.
