Opinions were voiced
at a wilderness hearing
for the Shenandoah National Park Service. The proposal was for six wilderness areas to be established in the Park. This designation would remain in effect in perpetuity except for the maintenance of trails. The land designated will amount to 61,940 acres. The statute would prevent development, including roads.
Construction for the 30-room elementary school for Rappahannock County has begun on the site purchased last year between Washington and Sperryville. Excavation has been completed and the building has begun to take shape.
A total of $1,806.30 was grossed at the Washington Carnival sponsored by Washington and Rappahannock Co. Fire and Rescue Squads.

THE TRIAL of Charles
Manuel Campbell was
set for August 3, 1972. Campbell was charged with four offenses relating to a murder and robbery. John Moffett Smith also has four charges aginst him for the same incident. The two are responsible for the slaying of John Swan Sutton behind Lombardy Restaurant in Amissville.
Debbie Smoot was named the new honorary fire chief for the Washington Fire Department. Debbie received her tiara from the retiring honorary chief, Judy Alther. Runners up included Kate Frazier and Shelia Fritts.
