Dance Halls “When I was about 18, I started going to dances. The whole upstairs in the old Washington school was a dance hall. And we danced some up over The Inn (at that time, Thornton’s Garage). The second floor of what is now Washington’s nationally acclaimed French restaurant also saw the birth of basketball in Rappahannock County. Until a gymnasium was built at the high school, the upstairs over the garage filled the bill, the home court for both boys and girls teams, according to Miller. “Basketball wasn’t known here until about 1922. Mr. Cox, the Episcopal preacher, started' it. He was a very religious man. He lost his mind afterwards,’’ Jack confided, shaking his head. “He had so much religion that he went crazy!”
