People who receive Social .Security or supplemental security income (SSI) payments because they are disabled can expect to have their claim reviewed at least once every 3 years unless they have a severe condition considered permanent, Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper, said recently.
Recent studies have shown that some people on the disability rolls no longer meet all requirements for benefits.
Social Security, as required by law, began a large—scale effort to make sure that only eligible individuals continue to receive disability checks. In addition, this effort is in line with the goal to improve administration of the disability programs.
In part, the new law recognizes the many advances that have been made in medical science and rehabilitation techniques over the past 25 years that Social Security has paid disability checks, Hundley said. People who had little hope for recovery from an accident or illness then have a better chance today of returning to gainful work.
