in 1980 to a present strength of 180,000. In February alone the organization raised $1.3 million for its final push to beat the June 30 deadline.
Message In Virginia
In Virginia, the message is also being heard. For example, Del. Mary Sue Terry (D-Stuart) became an ERA supporter after a poll in her district was taken during the 1982 session of the General Assembly.
The poll apparently showed strong support for ERA. The House of Delegates elections this fall could bring more proratification lawmakers into the legislature, but the problem still will be how to break the new amendment out of the House Privileges and Elections Committee where the one which is now about to expire was kept bottled up for nine years.
In view of the time required for Congress to complete action on a proposed Constitutional amendment and send it on to the states, it is possible that the ERA will not come before the 1983 legislative session. But it almost certainly will be there in 1984 and beyond until ratification is achieved, with or without Virginia’s help.
After all, the Old Dominion did not get around to approving the Women’s Suffrage Amendment until 40 years after it had become a part of the Constitution!
