It contains besides the usual county buildings (lately erected) one academy, 55 dwelling houses, four mercantile stores, two taverns, one house of public worship, free for all denominations. The principal mechanics are four blacksmiths, four carpenters, two saddlers, one hatter, one tanner, two wagon makers, three tailors, four shoemakers, one cabinet maker, one silversmith, three milliners, one plasterer and bricklayer. In the vicinity, there is a large and highly respected female seminary in which are taught all the various branches of English literature together with French and Italian languages; and in the immediate neighborhood, are two large and extensive manufacturing-four mills. This village is rapidly improving and is in a flourishing and prosperous condition, being situationed in a thickly settled and enterprising neighborhood. Population 350 persons; of whom four are attorneys and two regular physicians.”
Bridge Closed
The first bridge on Route 612 off of Route 211 east of Sperryville is closed for repairs.
Traffic will be detoured on Route 671 and Route 600 back to Route 612. According to the Highway Department's Washington office, the bridge is expected to be reopened on July 7.
