COUNTY magistrate

Miss Margaret Compton

was re-elected to office along with the entire slate of women for the council. Miss Compton has been magistrate for 14 years and is the only magistrate the county has ever had.

A mother and daughter were killed by a hit and run driver as they were returning to their home in Washington, Va. Mrs. Edith Jenkins Updike and daughter Joyce Mae were struck by an oncoming car as they walked down the shoulder of Rt. 211. After striking the two the car continued onward. A suspect was caught in the incident.

Ground was broken

for the Aileen Manufacturing

Plant that was to be constructed outside of Flint Hill. Construction time was projected at 120 days with an estimated need of 275-300 workers to run the plant.

Mrs. Charles H. Estes of Sperryville was the recipient of the coveted tricolor award at the Rappahannock Garden Club Flower Show. Mrs. E.M. Jones awarded the Sweepstakes prize.

The average number of forest fires in Rappahannock County tripled in the months of March and April. The increase has been credited to the dry conditions which made it hard for forest fires to be controlled once they started. High winds also were a contributing factor in the rampant burning.
