John added, “Impressionists painted* about everyday life and so by looking at them you could understand the culture and the French way of thinking which helped you to understand the language.”
Different artists appealed to the students. Elaine McCabe and Mike DeLuise told of their favorite artists.
Elaine had researched Gauguin and was confident that she could recognize his style. However, she discovered that not all artists paint the same all the time. “I had reported on how Gauguin’s paintings were flat and how he used bright colors. When I got to the museum I saw that all of his paintings were 3-D and with drab colors. I found out later that the difference was because they had been done during a different time period.”
