Dorte is Jan Hitt’s pen pal.
“Dorte likes music. Her favorite rock group is ‘The Herreys’ from Sweden,” Jan said. “She asked me about my friends and the type of school I go to. I noticed that her handwriting was very neat and easy to read. They have extra letters in their alphabet. Some of them look like two letters put together. She hasn’t written anything about her country, only about her friends. I noticed in her picture that she has one ear that is pierced and the other is pierced twice and she wears a band in the middle of one ear.”
Matthew Eidson wrote to Charlotte who is a 13-year-old Danish girl who likes to play soccer and listen to music. “She has four pen pals. She asked me if our school was big and if I had any pets. She lives on a farm,” Matthew continued. “She uses the metric system and she doesn’t really write in cursive. It’s a whole different style of writing.”
All of the American pen pals noticed that Danish writing styles, schools, customs and language were different. True, there are many miles between America and Denmark. However, there was one thread of commonality that made the pen pals feel very close — music.
