Victory in two of Old Dominion’s three remaining timber races went to Juliet Graham who put in two excellent rides to win the ladies’ timber and a division of the novice timber.
In the ladies’ timber race, riding Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bullitt’s Ocean Flight, Ms. Graham was in third position a couple of lengths behind as the leaders jumped the final fence. But as the front two runners, Michele Rouse on Quackerjack and Kip Johnson on No Deterrent, fought for the lead in the downhill stretch, Ms. Graham and her mount sped past them on the inside to win by little more than half a length.
Ms. Graham’s second win, in the first division of the maiden timber race, was by a far greater margin, but almost ended in disaster.
After leading from the start, Ms. Graham was almost seyen, .lengths ahead of thy rest oCthe field at the final fence when her mount Rep hit %he top rail. Rep’s head went forward and he almost fell.
Ms. Graham’s rigorous training, which includes weight lifting, saved her from a fall. Instead of being
