Taking the advice of Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, the Rappahannock supervisors decided to look a gift horse in the mouth and request that a citizens committee promise to pay for changes in design for the courthouse remodeling.
The issue arose when historically concerned citizens objected to proposed changes in the ceiling and light fixtures at the courthouse.
Headed by Dr. Werner Krebser, the group offered to raise funds from private sources to pay the extra cost involved in substituting sheetrock for acoustical tiles and recessed light fixtures and chandeliers for fluorescent lights. In addition, the group volunteered to pay for drapes and refinishing the courtroom benches.
The changes will add at least $4,000 to the contract price for which the county is ultimately responsible, according to Mr. Luke.
“I think it’s a good idea to get written assurances that, when the bill comes in, these people will be responsible for the extra amount,” he said, adding that he’d heard several committee members remark that they would pay for that extra “within reason.”
“I don’t want to get the bill and then have the ad hoc committee dissolve after squabbling over who pays what and how much,” Mr. Luke said, asking the supervisors to at least look at the changes before they are “a fait accompli.”
