At Monday’s public hearing, proposed changes in the county’s building permit and inspection fee schedule brought no comment, but Building Inspector Emiel Smet’s announcement of new state requirements for building permits set off an avalanche of questions.
“Now any time you build a structure — regardless of the cost — you will need a building permit,” Mr. Smet told the Board of Supervisors. The requirement applies even to prefabricated storage sheds delivered intact to a site, he explained, as well as to the demolition and removal of a building.
Asked if the new regulation covers wood storage shelters with roofs but no walls, Mr. Smet replied, “I hate to answer that one! But I don’t believe so.”
