Last Saturday dawned wet and dismal for the Old Dominion Hunt races, but rain has rarely stopped horse people from competing, and it didn’t this time.
The foxhunters who got up and loaded their horses in the rain were rewarded for their grittiness and perseverance when they got to Ben Venue for the pairs races. The rain had stopped. Despite the early morning showers, only four of the original 29 pairs entered scratched, leaving a healthy field to contest the Old Dominion’s pair course under dry though threatening skies.
Although the course started at the hunt’s racetrack, as it had every year previously, the route was different this year with several new trails and fences.
It was an attractive and appealing course to horse and rider following new cleared trails through the woods behind the race course over a variety of obstacles before opening out into rolling pastures on the turn for home. The route, according to officials, was approximately three miles. It was probably a little less in fact, judging by the times for the course.
First place in the fast time division, with a time of 8:27 minutes, went to Rappahannock’s Mike Brown on Little And Bold and Brian
