Addressing the current school budget, Mr. Estabrook warned that spending constraints are “very tight . . . We’ll have to watch it very closely, especially over the next month. But I do not see any reason why we should go over our allotment.”
As of the end of March, with 75 percent of the school year gone, 65 percent of the $2,881,711 allocated by the supervisors for the 1985-86 had been spent, according to the budget report. Line items showing over 100 percent expenditure including traveling expenses for the administration and school board (109%), elementary school substitures (180%), travel expenses for instructional personnel (107%), textbook allotment (101%), medical and dental supplies (128%), insurance on vehicles (128%), telephone service (144%), contracted services for building and grounds (129%) and for operation of school property (105%), insurance (131%), and workman’s compensation (123%).
(In comparing percent of funds expended with percent of school year elasped, it should be noted that instructional staff compensated in 12-month increments will continue to be paid from 1985-86 funds for two months after the fiscal year ends.)
Mr. Estabrook announced that, as part of the gifted and talented program, a summer computer camp for grades 1-7 will be offered at the elementary school June 16-27. Helen LaCava, high school math teacher and formerly one of Fairfax County school’s primary computer teachers, will be the instructor.
