Just over a high ridge above Tiger Valley, Richard and Sandra Antony have established the Long Mountain Nursery, specializing in azaleas and offering 100 different varieties.
Although the Antonys have lived full-time on Long Mountain only since December, they’ve owned land there since 1978 and spent many years starting their business in hours off from their jobs with the government.
"I used to backpack here and, like many urban people, 1 dreamed of moving to the country,” Mr. Antony said. "Sandra and I were determined not to end up like those people who spend their whole lives wishing fur a change, but can’t ever figure out a way to leave the city.”
With help from family members, the Antonys built a barn and the outbuildings, then cleared the growing areas.
Meanwhile, at home in Adelphi, a Maryland suburb, they experimented with azalea propagation. In addition to azaleas, they grew all the vegetables they could fit in their suburban back yard.
"Really, it was a neighbor who suggested that we grow azaleas,” Mr. Antony explained. “We were looking for a way to produce a lot on a small acreage and this seemed to make sense.”
The Antonys began their Rappahannock business in earnest in 1982. With a new business, a new baby (Christopher) and regular jobs, they spent some very busy years.
