Poppy’s Turn belongs to Jay Barr, owner of Houyhnhnm Farm (pronounced Whinny-hem) near Hume. Houyhnhnm, says Mr. Barr, was the land of the horses in the book Gulliver’s Travels.
The second division of the maiden hurdle was a lot less dramatic than the first with Charlie Fleischmann taking the early lead on Stately Bred. Michael Barry on Ebetimu and “Speedy” Smithwick on Barney R. gave the leader a challenge and diverted attention away from Don Yovanovich on Tic-Tac who had moved from the back of the pack up to second by the second-last fence, and then managed to take the lead.
Barney R. tried to take the lead away from TicTac at the last fence, and the two dashed head-tohead down the stretch. At the wire the margin was close again, but the judges called Tic-Tac the winner.
It was a happy day for the winning owners, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Bullitt whose Ocean Flight had also won the ladies’ race. The Bullitts, who live near Louisville, Ky., are no strangers to the thrills of steeplechasing. The Oxmoor Steeplechase meet is held annually at their farm, Oxmoor.
