1 he board initially approved that county-owned property — now a dumpster lot — for the dog pound location, spent more than $4,000 for improvements there, then backed off in response to citizen opposition and a threatened legal suit.
“It has water, sewer, good road access. It’s not close enough to be offensive to adjoining property owners,” Mr. Gilkey maintained. But he noted that the supervisors had promised to hold a second public hearing before acting, if it decided to locate the animal shelter there.
In answer to questions regarding alternative locations, Ms. Saltonstall informed the board that an unidentified person has offered to give the county land for a pound.
“But we’re not prepared to talk about that until you make up your mind about Scrabble,” she said, predicting that similar opposition will surface to the alternative site.
. She said, however, the alternative is within three or four miles of the county’s geographic center and is on a paved road. She also agreed to meet privately with Mr. Gilkey to further discuss the alternate location.
“We’re in violation of state law (requiring an animal shelter) and that’s bad,” said Supervisor Estes, urging progress on a pound site.
