Route 28 work sought

Route 28 through Fauquier County should be widened and a “spur” connecting Route 17 to Route 29 north of Warrenton should be built to ease traffic congestion according to local officials.

Representatives from Fauquier will ask highway officials during a public hearing Friday in Culpeper to allocate money for the projects.

They also will request funding to build overpasses on the soon-to-be-completed eastern bypass, tp speed up the four-laning of Route 17 and to widen a portion of Warrenton’s Shirley Avenue.

The hearing —to consider highway requests for the Culpeper district — will start at 9 a.m. Friday, April 11, at the district headquarters on Route 15 in Culpeper.

School budget cuts?

Clarke County School Superintendent Wade Johnson is trying to cut $287,000 out of the proposed 1986-87 school budget.

“We haven’t been able to find it yet,” he said Mon day.

In an Apnl 2 meeting on the $6.2 million proposal the supervisors insisted they would only supply half of the requested $500,000 in new local funds.

The governing body insisted the School Board rework the budget, without touching a 10 percent raise for teachers mandated by the General Assembly.

Johnson said Monday he was reducing every category in the budget
