The symposium gave the students a chance to observe the importance of basic research in various areas of science. It included lectures on contemporary science by outstanding academicians, visits to research laboratories, and scholarly presentations by students.

The major objectives of the symposium were to search out talented youths and to encourage the development of their scientific interest and abilities.

Science teacher Theresa McGrady enjoyed a talk by Dr. George Simmons. He is with the department of biology at Virginia Tech and studies in the Antarctic. She said, “He showed films and talked about research projects that he was doing there.”

Another favorite among the participants was Dr. Luther Brice, who put on a chemical magic show. He used basic laboratory chemicals and mixed them to create unique results.

Ms. McGrady commented, “Dr. Brice told us what he was doing but in a story form so everyone would enjoy it. One of the stories was from the Bible which told of a wife being turned to salt. So he turned a glass statue into salt by using chemicals.”

Student Tom Massie intends to communicate what he learned from Dr. Brice to Mr. Patterson. Tom said, “Mr. Patterson likel to do interesting things to wake up his morning classes so I’m going to tell him about some things that Dr. Brice did.”

Tom felt that he had benefited from attending the symposium in two ways. One was increasing his scientific knowledge and the other was learning about the Virginia

Coffey graduates

Airman Wendy M. Coffey, daughter of Susie C. and David T. Coffey of Boston, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force air passenger specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.

During the course, students were taught procedures for processing passengers and their baggage for travel aboard civilian contract and military aircraft.

Airman Coffey is a 1985 graduate of Rappahannock County High School.
