Area boy has meningitis

A 3-year-old Fauquier County boy has been hospitalized with bacterial meningitis, a life-threatening inflammation of the membranes which cover the brain and spinal cord.
The boy, a student at the Village Child Care Center in The Plains, became ill and was admitted to Fairfax Hospital Saturday, April 5. Susan Saunders, owner and director of the day care center, said the boy’s mother told her his condition was critical but stable on Tuesday.
The parents of children with whom the boy had had contact and who attend the child care center were called by Dr. John Einarson, Health Director of the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District, and informed of the disease’s flu-like symptoms. Dr. Einarson recommended the children take an antibiotic prophylactic which kills the Hemophilus influenza bacteria before it enters the blood stream and causes systemic illness.
Dr. Einarson warned parents to be alert to symptoms because early diagnosis of the disease improves chances for survival. About 5 percent of bacterial meningitis victims die despite treatment with antibiotics.
