James DeBergh has won approval from Washington’s Architectural Review Board for a new Harris Hollow Fruit Company office in the vacanLlot across the street from the
Washington, jiaj^st Church.
According to ARB member Evelyn Willis, the*4ruit and vegetable brokerage business will be housed in a log building constructed with dismantled, numbered logs from an old barn in Harris Hollow. Work at the site, formerly the W. B. Jenkins property, is to begin immediately.
The ARB also okayed a sign request from Joyce Kramer for a bed and breakfast on Gay Street.
Sitting with ARB members Evelyn Willis, Jim Thomason and Carol Miller at the March 20 meeting was Bryan Mitchell from the Historic Landmarks Commission in Richmond. “We invited him to critique us — and he did!” Mrs. Willis reported. “He took us apart and helped put us back together again. ”
According to Mrs. Willis, Mr. Mitchell will assist the ARB in developing criteria and procedures for approving construction and renovation projects in the historical town. “We hope to develop lists of requirements and what’s allowed by right. We want to make it (the by-right list) as large as possible so people who want to paint or add a porch don’t have to fool with us,” Mrs. Willis said.
