Virginia’s Tuberculosis status will officially change once our department of agriculture receives notice from USD A in the federal register, this according to recent comments by J. Carlton Courter, Commissioner of Agriculture. That is we have not officially lost our suspended free status, but we will once things go through channels higher up.
He said that since another cow had been found in a herd that was tested within the prescribed distance from the original source herd in Floyd County, USDA automatically will suspend our free status. Despite being demoted from our TB free status, Mr. Courter feels that it will not have an impact on cattle marketing.
The count ,down will begin, lasting two years, after this second herd in Floyd is depopulated. If no other cases arise during that time, we are eligible to reapply for TB-free status. This free status allows breeding stock and all cattle for that matter, to move freely between states with no restrictions on destination or inspection. Your origin from a “free state” is your ticket to travel. Yet, a lot of cattle move out of North Carolina which does not have the free status.
