The first freeze of autumn forms when the air is relatively cool the day before. Be wary of cloudy daytime skies that prevent maximum temperatures from reaching 66 F. Freezes are especially likely when these cool days are followed by a clear night with little or no wind.
The clear night skies allow heat from the soil surface and plants to escape into space. Eventually, if there are enough hours of nighttime heat loss, plant temperatures will fall below freezing, usually just before sunrise. Since the ground and plant surfaces cool the most, wind helps mix warmer air from above, reducing the risk of a freeze. Likewise, cloudy skies at night reduce heat loss and freeze risks. j
