The traditional carving of the jack-o’-lantem was brother to America by English and Scottish settlers. One story sayd English folklore told of “Jack of the Lantern,” a night watchman whose soul was rejected by the devil. Caught between two worlds, his ghost was doomed to wander bogs and marshes, especially on All Hallow’s Eve, carrying an ember from hell to light his way.
In Scotland and England, people carved faces into hollowed-out trumipcs, placed candles in them, and set them in windows. The flickering, threatening, faces scared away spooks until the dreadful night was past.
Americans replaced turnips with pumpkins. “That’s fortunate,” said Hertzler, “because it’s probably easier to get children enthusiastic about creating and eating nutritious dishes with pumpkin than it would have been with trunips.”
