She opened her own store in part of a house she and her husband Martin Woodard purchased. They sold herbs, fresh and dried, arrangements such as wreaths and kissing balls made from herbs and dried flowers, and some country crafts. “We hoped it would pay the mortgage,” Martin Woodard said.
At that time he had his own business as a stonemason. This was Mrs. Woodard’s second business venture. In the 1960’s she started and operated Beautiful Day, the first natural foods store in Washington, D.C.
