“It’s going to be very difficult for somebody (a racing stable) to base themselves in Southeast Virginia and makes those trips. ”
Supporters of Colonial Downs, the New Kent track, said for every two horses that come, three jobs will be created. But the fact that the new track will only offer racing about three months of the year also concerns Miller.
“You can’t expect people to more in for 30 to 60 days and become a good part of the community,” he said.
Colonial Downs will generate some jobs, he admitted, but nowhere near as many as would have been created with a full schedule of racing.
“You really need full-time jobs so poel buy hones, raise their children, send them to school and do things in the community rather than moving in like a carnival.”
Some rural Virginians have been lobbying for a horse track for years, believing it will boost their sector of the economy. That will happen, Miller said, but not as much as they had hoped.
