Since school is back in session, it seems that every parents I talk to expresses how busy and hectic there routine is again. Most families have at least one or more extra-curricular activies like basketball, soccer, cross-country, riding lessons, piano lessons, scouts, 4-H, karati, ballet, etc. And once that’s over, it’s home for dinner and help the children with their homework.
So for my nutrition column this week, I decided to share information I just received from the Virginia Cattleman’s Association on ground beef and fast family meals. Ground beef is hard to beat when it comes to versatility and convenience.
Tips:
Ground beef packages are labeled according to U.S. Department of Agriculture standards and by supermarket preference. Lean to fat ratios vary; however, if a package is labeled ground beef, it must be no more than 30 percent fat.
A bright, cherry-red color indicates fresh ground beef. However, fresh ground beef goes through a number of color changes during its i shelf life. A darker, purplish-red color is typical of vacuum-packaged ground beef or the interior of packaged ground beef or the interior of packaged ground beef which has not been exposed to oxygen. Once ex
