Yet surface looks can be deceiving. The black support for Robb may be a mile wide and an inch thick. Many black leaders I talk to make it clear they are not enthusiastic about Robb but support him only because he’s the Democrat and Wilder is no longer in the race.
Robb’s close ties to Clinton may hurt him more than they help since the President remains with consistently negative number in polls taken in Virginia.
And then there is what some respected political pundits call the “voting booth” effect which may be of great help to North.
That theory holds that while polls show Robb and North aboud dead even with independent Republican candidate Marshall Coleman getting anywhere from 10 to 15 percent of the vote, that Robb in order to win probably needs to demonstrate at least a lead of 7 to 8 points in polls.
