Steven Clark, 18, of Washington, was recently selected as a Finalist in this year’s National Merit Scholarship competition. Clark earned this honor by competing against more than 1.2 million students in over 20,000 U.S. high schools.
For Steven Clark and these other students, the 2001 National Merit Scholarship competition begem when, as high school juniors, they took the 1999 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Ttest (PSAT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. He was among a select group of less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors who advanced beyond this initial step to become Semifinalists.
Tb advance to the next step and become Finalists, Clark and other Semifinalists were required to have an outstanding high school academic record, be endorsed and recommended by their school principal, and submit SAT scores that confirmed their earlier qualifying test performance.
