In our area, fall bulbs should be planted from October through December. Bulbs which bloom early, like winter aconite and snow crocuses, should go in soonest for best root development.
Still, expect bulbs to bloom a few weeks late their first year.
If you need to store bulbs before planting, keep them below 70 degrees and away from moisture. The refrigerator is OK as long as there is no fruit in there, like apples whose methane gas will kill the bulb embryo.
Although bulbs may look like sturdy little packages, they already contain next year’s leaves and flower and deserve special care.
